Daily Bites for those who have a hunger for Gods Word. Romans 8:17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. In this paragraph of his letter that started with verse 12 Paul started with describing what someone who is indwelt by the Holy Spirit will look like. They will live by the Spirit. He does this under the context of a parent/child relationship. Those that have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and have had the Holy Spirit to come indwell them as a result of that salvation, have become sons and daughters of God the Father. He also briefly mentions some of the great benefits of that indwelling Holy Spirit which Paul will later expand on some more. He wraps up this paragraph by commenting on the fact that as children of God we have an inheritance coming our way. In the beginning of this verse he says, and if children This statement isnt a question of whether or not you are children of God, because Paul has already dealt with that. This statement could be said this way, Since you are children then you are heirs also because you are children. We are fellow heirs with Christ. Christ is the first fruits, he is the the eternal God in human flesh who made the perfect sacrifice to make it possible for us to be partakers in this inheritance of glory from God. Our inheritance is what we are looking forward to in hope. We eagerly await many wonderful things that will come in the future as a result of our salvation in Christ Jesus. One of which is the fact that God Himself will come and dwell with men personally forever. Also, we will receive new glorified bodies, as well as other things. The other issue addressed in this particular verse is the fact that if we indeed suffer with Him we will also be glorified with Him. This isnt a verse that is commanding us to go out and look for suffering. Hurting yourself wont bring you any future glory. This verse is speaking to the fact that if you are saved and you identify and live for Christ you will suffer persecution just like Jesus did. It may not be the exact kind he faced but you will suffer persecution for His names sake. And as a result of that if you do suffer that persecution it is another testifying fact to your soul that your hope is not in vain, because if you do suffer for Christ you can also expect that the glory is coming too! Praise God!
