Daily Devotion by Raul Ries TUESDAY January 6, 2015 Jealousy & Pride Now it had happened as they were coming home, when David was returning from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women had come out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy, and with musical instruments. So the women sang as they danced, and said: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” 1 Samuel 18:6-7 This was a common greeting from the children of Israel. When the men of war returned from the battle the women would sing and dance, celebrating their return and their victory. King Saul enjoyed returning to this greeting, going from city to city. It made him feel important, like a hero, because they would always say, “Saul has slain his thousands.” On this occasion, the women came out with their instruments, singing and dancing, proclaiming the great feats of King Saul, but there was a small change. They not only praised King Saul, but they also praised David. They not only praised David, but they made his victory greater than Saul’s. While he killed thousands, David killed ten thousands. Wow! Saul was not the hero. Saul missed the main thing. He was not a hero. It was not about Saul or David. The victory belonged to the Lord! The glory and honor belong to the Lord. If Saul really understood this in his heart, he would not be upset, but in his flesh, in his pride, he wanted credit for the victory, and he did not want to share the glory. When we set our pride aside and recognize who gets all the glory, we will not be jealous of others. We will pray for them and lift up their hands. The flesh ever seeks to be glorified before it is crucified. ~Martin Luther~
