Daily Dose #64 “Go!” Garner’s cousin Simon taught him how to play catch while visiting here last week. Garner is quite taken with the activity and wants to play a least a couple of times a day. He’s not the world’s greatest catch (he can only catch the football, and only if it’s thrown lengthwise), but he can toss pretty well. Today, we’re playing and he starts to count. “One, too, fee….” “Go,” I think. That is how we usually say the phrase. “Fo, fi, sis….” “Go?” I wonder. No. “Se-en, eight, ni….” Surely, he’ll stop at ten. “Ten, el-en, go!” He shouts and tosses the ball. I didn’t realize the standard countdown had been upgraded from three to eleven, but I did manage to catch the ball despite my surprise. I decide to try an experiment. If I do the usual, “One, two, three, go,” will he repeat me or go back to his elongated eleven count? ”One, two, three, go,” I say and toss him the ball. He catches and prepares to return. “Too, fee, fo, fi, go!” he shouts this time. I get it. That’s his catch strategy. If he constantly changes up the countdown, his opponent will never know when the ball is coming.
