Mindfulness meditation has increased in popularity due to its effect on mental and physical health, but most research has focused on lengthy training programs. Investigators at Carnegie Mellon University are the first to show the mindfulness meditation practiced for just 25 minutes for three consecutive days can reduce psychological stress. Psychoneuroendocrinology, July 2014 Health Alert: Violence or Injury Responsible for Nearly 80% of Deaths of Americans Under Age 30. A new report finds that during the first 30 years of life, injuries and violence are the largest cause of death for Americans. According to the study, 79% of these deaths are cause by unintentional injury, suicide, and homicide. Unintentional injuries include assault, car accidents, drowning, drug overdoses, falls, and firearm-related injuries. Chronic disease (20%) and infectious disease (1%) account for the remaining deaths. The Lancet, July 2014 Diet: Protein Intake May Be Key to Weight Loss. Scientists have discovered primates, including humans, benefit from a proper balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats in their diet, with a priority on protein intake. This means that if a primate cant get adequate protein, they may overeat foods with more fats and carbohydrates in order to do so, thereby increasing their total energy intake. Because the rise in obesity in recent decades corresponds to an increased daily caloric intake and decreased protein consumption, researchers hypothesize that emphasizing eating more protein per day could help humans consume a more balanced and less calorie-rich diet. Society for Experimental Biology, July 2014 Exercise: Yoga Stimulates Brain Function. A single 20-minute session of Hatha yoga significantly improved speed and accuracy in tests of working memory and inhibitory control, which is linked with ability to focus and take in, retain, and use new information. The research comes from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and involved 30 female undergraduate students. Study author Dr. Neha Gothe adds, Enhanced self-awareness that comes with meditational exercises is just one of the possible mechanisms. Besides, meditation and breathing exercises are known to reduce anxiety and stress, which in turn can improve scores on some cognitive tests. Journal of Physical Activity and Health, July 2013 Chiropractic: Spinal Manipulation & Exercise Effective for Seniors with Chronic Neck Pain. Neck pain in the senior population can have considerable negative implications on their health and quality of life. In a recent study of individuals 65 years of age or older with a complaint of neck pain for 12 weeks or longer, participants received either spinal manipulation and home exercise, supervised exercise, or home exercise. The results after 12 weeks of treatment revealed that spinal manipulation with home exercise resulted in greater pain reduction than either supervised exercise or home exercise alone. Spine, November 2013 Wellness/Prevention: How Giving Blood May Reduce the Risk of Heart Disease in Shift Workers. A team of scientists in Austria have found that working non-traditional hours severely affects the viscosity of red blood cells, which may explain why shift workers suffer from a 30% higher incidence of heart disease. In a study on animals, researchers found that those subjected to irregular hours had higher numbers of aged red blood cells, which accumulate in the blood vessels, usually carry less oxygen, and are normally removed from the circulatory system by the spleen and liver. Because blood donation stimulates the production of new, healthy red blood cells, the research team suggests that regularly giving blood may counter some of the negative cardiovascular effects from shift work.
