Daily Lenten Reflections by the Dominican Family Offered by the Dominican Province of St. Martin de Porres FRIDAY, MARCH 14, 2014 By: Rev. Scott OBrien, O.P. Irving, TX When a young woman enters one of our monasteries she is usually escorted through a reception line consisting of all the members of the community, and as they welcome her with the Kiss of Peace, each Sister will offer some word of welcome such as: God bless you, Welcome to our community, I’ll be praying for you, and occasionally you will hear some say: I’m praying for your perseverance. To achieve any goal, perseverance is needed. Ezekiel seems to be telling us this in his own way: Stay with the good you have begun or the good to which you have returned or fall into an evil from which you may not be able to escape, and then all the good you have done will count for nothing for lack of perseverance. Perseverance is not an easy virtue, demanding as it does – well – perseverance! It is so easy to give up when the goal seems so far away or asks more of us than we anticipated. “Why bother!” is often the sound of surrender, as if “bother” was something too much to be asked, rather than the very core of the endeavor. Unless we ‘bother’ we will never even begin much less persevere. ‘Bother’ is what gives meaning to what we undertake, whether it be easy or difficult, because to ‘bother’ is to care and to care is to love and what could be grander than to persevere in love? Now is the time to re-examine what we care – or bother – about and see if it really deserves our perseverance. -- opsouth.org/lenten-reflection-by-friar-scott-obrieno-p/ learn more about dominican monasteries: nunsopsummit.org
