Daily Light October 20, 2014 Matthew 7:21-23 We come back today to the Sermon on the Mount and to a passage of scripture that should make professing believers think seriously about their salvation. The Lord speaks of a time of judgment when there will be some that stand before Him who will say, “Lord, Lord have we not prophesied in Thy named and in Thy name have cast out demons and in Thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them I never knew you depart from me.” How do you know that you are a Christian? Do you base that assumption on your good works as this group did? If you are really saved the Bible is plain in its teaching that there will be evidence of it in your life. Let’s see that illustrated in an imaginary story about the Apostle Paul. When the Lord saved Paul he made a change in Him. He went from persecuting Christians to preaching Christ. Here is a very important principle, without repentance there is no redemption. Just suppose Paul gave a glowing testimony in a revival service in the First Baptist Church of Damascus. He might tell you what an emotional and thrilling experience it was and how he called on the Lord and was gloriously saved. He might have even written a song, “On the Damascus Road” and have a book published, “Struck Blind So I Could See.” Then suppose you ran into Paul the next day and found him headed out of town with his caravan equipped with handcuffs , rope, and paddy wagons and the same crowd of bounty hunters that were with him when he had his so-called experience a week or so ago. “Good morning Paul where are you headed this fine day?” Paul replies, “I am headed out to track down those Christians and arrest them.” “But Paul, I thought you were saved?” “Of course, I am didn’t you hear my testimony yesterday at Church?” Would you believe that he was really saved? Of course not! He would still be the same old Paul. This group at the judgment is made up of people who are depending on their good works for their entrance into Heaven but Jesus said He never knew them. So in Paul and these who stand at the judgment we see two different claims for entrance into Heaven. Both groups (Paul and the people standing at the judgment) represent two different answers to a question that the Lord might ask, “Why should I let you into My Heaven?” The ones who are standing before the Lord at the Judgment are depending on their good works and Paul is depending on his so-called experience of salvation but the Lord’s answer to both is the same. “Sorry I never knew you.” May God richly bless you as you walk in the light!
