Daily Manna 2014: Unequal Yoke Hurts Monday 20, January 2014 TEXT: JUDGES 15:1-8 Key verse: “And her father said, I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her” (Judges 15:2). There is always a price to pay for associating with the wrong people in life. Whether it is through marriage or in business partnership, or even in ordinary friendship, the consequences of unequal yoke are very severe. Samson best illustrates this point. From the word go, his relationship with the Philistine woman in our text was doomed, but only he did not see it. On their wedding day, he became so light-hearted as to begin to put a riddle to the Philistines. He was bent on ridiculing them. But they so threatened his new bride that she brought enormous pressure on Samson to disclose to her the full meaning of the riddle. Being morally weak, especially with women, he succumbed and told her everything. The fine for loosing the contest was 30 sets of garments. He had to kill 30 innocent men to procure their garments with which to pay his fine. At the end of this, he stormed out and for a long time abandoned his new and treacherous wife. When he sobered up and returned many months later, his wife had been taken over by another man. In anger, he set the farmlands of the Philistines on fire. They, in turn, burnt Samson’s wife and father-in-law with his house. Still burning in a rage, Samson went out and killed many Philistines - all this damage because he related with the wrong woman! Many people have lost their peace of mind; some have suffered great financial and material losses, and some have even lost their lives simply because they made friends with people who do not have the same standard of morality and faithfulness by which all Christians are expected to live. If you are in such a relationship already, you must quickly retrace your steps and quit. Only then will the Lord receive you and prevent the danger that lurks around the corner. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Leave the world and the world will leave you.
