Daily Nation.: The 2011 Africa Junior 1,500m champion Hillary Maiyo and little-known Lina Chepchirchir Thursday braved scorching heat and strong opposing winds to lift the University of Eldoret 10-kilometre road race. The race drew a fierce battle between close to 300 seasoned and budding athletes from far-flung areas in this athletics-rich region. After winning the Praha World Challenge 1,500m race two months ago, Maiyo banked on his track and road race experience to teach upcoming runners a lesson, leading from gun to tape and breasting the tape in 30 minutes, 18.7 seconds. “The race kicked off a bit late when the sun was strong. The heat was the greatest challenge here and it slowed me down,” said Maiyo, a regular pace-maker in Diamond League track meets, adding that he is currently in good shape and can clock a sub-28 minutes time. Maiyo hails from Kipakeren Salien in Uasin Gishu County and is coached by Italian Claudio Barardelli under the Kaptagat-based Rosa Associates. Shadrack Korir (30.28.7) came second with Rodgers Maiyo (30.31.1), Godfrey Maiyo (30.42.2) and Daniel Kipkemei (30.48.9) third, fourth and fifth in that order. Pre-race favorite Hosea Nailel, the former Baringo Half Marathon champion and a formidable runner in local races faded off to 14th place in the fiercely contested race.
