Daily Zamboanga Times, Today’s Manna by Berlie G. Yap October 2, 2013 Zamboanga City Walls City walls in the medieval time were extremely crucial for safety and protection. See the old Europe or the Wall of China all of them were built to protect kingdoms from invading forces. The stronger the walls the more impregnable kingdoms were. Walls now in the 21st century are irrelevant but comparative though another invisible enclosure provides us a same protection and safety. The massive presence today of the military and police in our City is equivalent to walls giving us a sense of safeness. Second, the courage of the Zamboangueños is also an unseen fortitude that makes our City stood against all the odds since its birth during the Spanish colonization. Thirteen years ago, bombs would just explode everywhere every thirty minutes. It spread fear to many, but it did not defeat the courageous spirit of the Zamboangueños. Amazing! Similar to 9/9 attack despite that it lasted three weeks, it never killed the strong character of the Zamboangueños. Praise the Lord! Third, the Lord must be preserving Zamboanga City everyday! “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. (Proverbs 18:10) God loves our City. He destined an eternal calling to Zamboanga that the Almighty is bound to stand for her every single day. Our City’s name derived from at least from four legends dubbed both by the earlier locals or migrants from the Malay region. But each of them speaks for as sea transportation or a bunch of fragrant flowers. City’s names are not coincident. It determines a destiny. Didn’t you wonder how Zamboanga is a sea transport hub and our fragrance according to our hymn attracts other people and once they stepped to our place they don’t anymore leave! Zamboanga is the pride of Mindanao. We’ve such characteristics very alluring for progress and developments. A couple left from Pampanga during the 60’s with only a handful of clothing to seek fortune here. And indeed, they made it! They created their own legends that following years more of their relatives made Zamboanga as their home. In terms of business, Zamboanga City is a best place. After the burning of Jolo many Tausugs transferred to Zamboanga. They invested here, now it is undeniable that one of our commercial strengths is our Muslim brothers. It is a calling of our City to be a center of Education. Schools, colleges and universities are all here. Dreams of many young people started to be formed here. There how many mariners you know were children of poor and struggling families but because they studied either in ZSCMST or Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College do have now fancy homes here or in Manila. Understand friend, God is involved in our affairs. He is not the author of confusions and troubles. Men with ill intentions are. Despite, God patiently lays eternal plans for Zamboanga. Since after the attack of the MNLF Misuari faction a new love was born in my heart for Mi Ciudad. Let’s not give up and succumb to fear beloved. Let’s rise and help rebuild our beautiful City. Zamboanga is one of a kind. You never can find any would you scower the entire universe. We ought to love her; give our lives for her; becomes an instrument of peace and prosperity for her not just for our time but also for the coming generations of our posterity. God bless you.
