Dairy Farmers Receive Milk Price Correction Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth said the 5c per litre price increase announced by Lion last week is an encouraging step forward in a long fought battle to pay farmers a fair price for their milk. The unprecedented increase of 5c per litre was a welcome piece of good news for local dairy farmers who supply milk to the milk factory at Malanda. This will inject some much needed cash back into the local economy and has the potential to stimulate positive growth in the industry, but it’s still a long way short of the 12c per litre that farmers need to break even. Mr Knuth congratulates all those who have worked relentlessly over many years towards achieving this price correction. Mr Knuth said, it’s a great start but more needs to be done to ensure the long term sustainability of the local dairy industry on the Atherton Tablelands. The increase has been announced on the proviso that sales of Dairy Farmers branded milk continues at the current level or increases. A downward trend in the sale of branded milk could result in the price increase being stripped from our local farmers and this would have catastrophic impact on the industry, Mr Knuth said. Mr Knuth said, by purchasing Dairy Farmers and locally produced milk we are supporting our local dairy farmers, local jobs and contributing towards the sustainability of the dairy industry on the Atherton Tablelands.
