***Daisy the Chinchilla Update*** Guernsey is very lucky to be blessed with some very reputable pets shops with some highly knowledgeable staff who have animal welfare at the top of their priority list. Sadly this cant be said for all pet shops on the Island. We have approached the pet shop named by the previous owner of Daisy the chinchilla who gave out the advice that chinchillas and rabbits could live happily together in the same cage. Sadly, we can confirm that this advice did come from a member of staff at the shop. We have given the staff and management strong words of advice and encouraged them to learn more about the animals in their care. Sarnia Guinea Pig Rescue, strongly believes that all staff working with animals should have a basic knowledge of animal welfare and a good general knowledge of the animals they keep, so they can share this knowledge with prospective new owners. But its not all the pet shops fault. The owner should have correctly researched the animal that she was taking on. The internet is full of free information about pet care and welfare, there are plenty of books for sale or available to borrow from the library about pet care, plus there are several animal welfare organisations on and off this Island willing to part with welfare advice. We have passed all details about this case and our welfare concerns for the remaining rabbit to the relevant authorities charged with enforcing animal welfare legislation on the Island.
