Dallas artists collaborate with area residents to turn vacant space into theater and bring their neighborhood stories alive. Event: “Story Corners” Outdoor Storytelling Festival & Neighborhood Fish Fry. Event date: April 12, 2014 Location: Tenth Street Historical District (intersection S. Cliff & Eleventh Sts. at Betterton Cir), Dallas Background: Many inner city neighborhoods have street corners and vacant lots that serve as gathering places for socializing and storytelling. In some of those same neighborhoods that blight and neglect have turned such corners and lots into breeding grounds for criminal activity and abandoned spaces with no activity at all. In an effort to reinvigorate such spaces in Dallas, a group of artists, in collaboration with the residents of the historic Tenth Street neighborhood, are having a storytelling festival and performance using a lot and street corners as their stage. Story Corners, the day long event will take place on Saturday, April 12 at the intersection of S. Cliff and Eleventh Streets at Betterton Circle, the site of unused vacant space in the underserved community that will be transformed into a pop up theater where residents will perform themes of the community through storytelling, poetry, spoken word and song. Story Corners is one of several art and design events that are part of the bcWorkshop art and public interest design initiative in the Tenth Street Historic District called Activating Vacancy. The Ark on Noah Street, an installation by Ft. Worth artist Christopher Blay, opened on March 1 and will be on display in the community for 40 days and 40 nights. The Story Corners project team consists of coordinators Linda Jones and Iv Amenti who are writers and performance artists; design and artists Eddie Fortuna, Lauren Cadieux, Erika Huddleston, Abigail Kipp, and Jason Spradling, who will provide stage, design and aesthetic support. The stories for the performances will come from what the residents produced during the community writing workshops held by Jones. Some of the residents will be trained to deliver their work during the performance directed by Amenti. The residents will also participate in creating the pop up stages under the guidance of the Story Corners design team. The Story Corners Project is funded by bcWorkshop through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
