Dana Barrett - Her first WEC Mini class win .... A brief rain storm on Saturday before the race made for perfect course conditions on Sunday. The sun came out and the temperatures were high testing all of the rider’s ability to properly hydrate. There was lots of competition in every class. In Pee Wee we saw a few new faces helping round out an eight rider start line. First time racers Ella and Travis Millson, son and daughter of well known Pro Adam Millson, lined up against some experienced Pee Wee stars. The Pee Wee course was a spectacular design with gentle MX style obstacles and big berms. Lap times were just over one minute, which had class winner Connor Taplay ending up with 27 laps in the 30 minute race. Second place Leland Ibey and third place Keaton Vander Hoek were not far behind with 24 laps. The Morning one hour Mini Race saw an outpouring of girls in the Mini Junior Class. The podium featured Dana Barrett in top spot putting seven laps on this challenging course one lap more than second place Mallory Heslinga. Third spot went to series regular Liam Smith. The Mini Senior win went to Kawasaki Canada’s Wolfgang Wiesner who finished two laps ahead second place Tanner Charette. Tanner was looking very good on his highly tuned Suzuki in the woods section and looks to first place contender in future events. By time the morning race program started temperatures were well into the 30s with high humidity. Although the course was in perfect condition and had rave reviews from the riders, the biggest challenge was dealing with the heat. Adam Dickie took an early lead of the start but by lap two Damon Strong moved to the front and never looked back. Damon finished in first ahead of Adam who were the only two riders able to put in 13 laps. In third place was Mike MacLennan who is adjusting to the full size bike extremely well after a great finish at round one at Motopark. In Vet Junior we saw Michael Toneguzzo edge out Charlie Lake for the win both putting in 14 laps. Scott Merritt took the final spot on the podium after taking his turn running near the front for a few laps earlier in the event. In Vet Senior there were some excellent performances and a bit of drama. It was a bit too much drama for series regular and frequent top finisher Keith Bichard who suffered a leak in his clutch line after leading for the first two laps. He hung on but finished just off the podium in fourth. Eugene Zsiga was able to take third spot. The Win went to the incredible quick Al Strong who retired his noteworthy Honda 600 and campaigned a new Yamaha YZ250 that obviously worked well. Right on his heels not letting him rest at any moment was Jim Crawford who is also flying on his new KTM four stroke. Al and Jim were the only riders in the class to post 13 laps. Our Super Senior Class is always one to watch closely as some serious talent lies with these gentlemen. It was no surprise to anyone that Brian West finished in top spot proving he is a fast as ever. Michael Disimono crossed the line seven minutes behind in second with Bryan Hill retiring his Gas Gas for a KTM and taking the final spot. The biggest news in the class would be Jeff Golden finishing off the podium for this first time in probably three years. Jeff is a very quick and consistent rider but the heat could have taken a toll on this experienced racer. Tom Schleihauf and Ken Gaudette also rode very well but succumbed to the day’s temperatures. Super Senior was chosen for the Inglis Cycle $100 Amateur Holeshot award and Bryan Hill’s new KTM was quick enough out of the hole to land him the money this time around. Photographer extraordinaire Alex Franklin rode exceptionally well to take the women’s class and James Moore rode his pristine Can-Am MX-6 to the win in Vintage. By the time the afternoon race began around 2pm it was HOT. Riders where preparing themselves by staying out of the sun and drinking lots of fluids to help them make it through the long afternoon race. Tanner Lay poured it on and jumped way ahead to win the Junior class with Kyle Gill in second and Nathan Bottema in third. Tanner was fast enough to squeak another lap in ahead of his competition totalling 11 laps in the afternoon heat. In Intermediate action we saw Kevin Blok in first place a lap ahead of up and coming fast guy Tyler Thiessen. At this round it was Intermediate that was selected for the Wiesner Insurance Fastest Lap Award and third place finisher Matt McGuire took home the $100. It was Matt’s second lap of 10 minutes, 50 seconds that was enough to edge out Kevin Blok’s fourth lap by a comfortable seven seconds. Vet Master saw a fantastic battle between Robb Hewitt and Keith Billings for the top spot. Keith was welded to Robb’s fender most of the race and got a chance to lead for a moment but it didn’t last. Robb took the win and won $100 in Yamabucks for his excellent efforts bringing Yamaha the win. Keith settled for second with brother Barry Billings in third. While on the podium Barry took a moment to give us some insight as to what to expect at the Parry Sound event as Barry is the key course designer there. Parry Sound will feature some new sections of trail and the resurrection of some sections that have not been used since the heyday of the World Championship in 2006 and 2007. Pro Class started off with motocrosser turned off-road star Adam Millson nailing the holeshot to take home the $100 Wiesner Insurance Pro Holeshot Award. The holeshot line at this round was different than normal with a very long run past the first dog-leg turn before breaking the ribbon. Yamaha Canada / Machine Racing’s Adam Millson was already reaching mach speed by then taking not only the holeshot but the lead stuck and he never looked back. KTM Canada / Mission Cycle’s Kevin Cockayne got within sight of Millson a couple of times during the two and a half hour race but Adams motocross prowess proved too valuable at this venue. Current Number One plate holder Steve Bond had his Lang’s Off-Road Gas Gas airborne on the MX track but settled for third spot. World Enduro Canada would like to thank; the land owner George McIntosh for the use of this fantastic property and all the work he did this spring to improve the MX track, his brother Scott and friends for their hard work in setting up a very entertaining course, and all the series sponsors which make it possible – Wiesner Insurance, Royal Distributing, Honda Canada, Yamaha Canada, KTM Canada, Parts Canada and Red Bull.
