Everyone mourns differently, when stricken with grief; an emotion response is inherit in us all. -- When we starting learning this piece, I did not know that my grandmother, Barbara Litton, would pass on in two months. The movement is slow, deliberate, united yet individual. Just like family at a funeral. You have experienced the same tragedy-yet everyone grieves differently. My aunt hides her grief and uses comedy to overcome. My father is very outwardly emotional and did not hide his tears. But they are united in grief. This piece comes after 9.1.1. in the show order. Makes sense. Our country was definitely united in grief after that tragedy. No matter your response--it was certainly something we all felt together. When I first started this piece--I did not have much to draw upon to evoke my emotions. Now I remember my grandmothers smile, the way she cleaned when she was upset (a trait I learned from her), how good her cooking was, and the smell of the lavender powder she put on me after giving me a bath as a child. Needless to say that this piece is sad. It is more to me than a costume change and movement. It is real. It is inside. It is a truly visceral experience for the audience. Never forget what happened us on 9/11. Always remember the light within those that have passed. Those we mourn.
