Dar City Center - DCC - Rakai PLE Star to Miss Joining Senior One While hundreds of successful Primary Leaving Examination-PLE candidates are gearing up to join senior one, one of Rakai’s best pupil could miss out due to lack of school fees. 14- year-old Alex Mazzi passed in division one with four aggregates. Alex Mazzi, the 14 year old who is uncertain of joining secondary school Mazzi sat his primary leaving education examination at Nabuunga Fountain of Education in Kalisizo Town Council in Rakai district where he was studied on a bursary. His father Henry Sserwadda, a resident of Mayanja village in Kakuuto Sub County broke up with his mother Agnes Namatovu when Mazzi was still a baby. Mazzi says that he grew up under the care of his auntie Ruth Nakiseka. According to Mazzi when he inquired about his parents, he was told they are in Kakuuto. He says in primary three, he went to visit his father to ask for tuition fees but he turned him away saying it was useless to waste money on him. He claims that, his father argued that it is a waste of money to student since many educated people are jobless. Mazzi says he is now stuck at home in Kalisizo uncertain of joining secondary school because his auntie does not have money. Namirembe Hillside is Mazzi’s first choice secondary school. He however, says that he can’t join the school a Good Samaritan intervenes to pay his school fees. According to Mazzi, he feels sad and sometimes cries because he read hard to get the desired aggregates to join a secondary school of his choice. Agnes Nakiseka, Mazzi’s aunt says she is stuck with him because she does not have the means to educate him. Nakiseka is a primary school teacher. Nakiseka says her brother, a peasant farmer and coffee trader in Kakuuto earns some money but abandoned his children when got another woman. Henry Sserwadda, Mazzi’s father said in a separate interview that he doesn’t have money to support his children. Sserwadda who has 15 children says that he doesn’t have a stable income to his children to good schools. Sserwadda counts on schools under universal primary education and universal secondary education. Mathias Kasamba, the Kakuuto Member of Parliament says there are over 100 children who cannot go to school because their parents cannot pay their fees. He says as result, many of these children go to him for financial help. Kasamba notes that majority of bright children end up being wasted in poor secondary schools in rural Kakuuto County because they cannot afford fees to enroll in good schools. Kasamba calls on sponsors to pick up such children and get them into better schools.
