Darryl Li writes about a breath - beautiful direct action that brings awareness to stop the deadly routine of institutional racism, that is ignored precisely because everyone is against it. Every year, Columbia has a tree lighting ceremony, in which college walk gets all lit up, student groups perform, and various student/admin representatives speak. This years ceremony, in light of the Mike Brown and Eric Garner no-indictment decisions, reflected the cognitive dissonance present in the community. As a war is being waged on Black Americans, our campus saw fit to continue business as usual and carry out a celebration- business as usual. Around 200 students gathered at the ceremony to stage a die-in. The goal was simple: to make it clear to the student body that everything is not business as usual, and that it is not acceptable to ignore reality, so long as it does not affect you. Black people in this country are actively being killed, extrajudicially, without justice - there is something real at stake here. The demonstration sought to make visible what others would clearly prefer to keep hidden...
