David Mitchell, for whom I have in the past often had time, has lost all my respect by complaining about American English. Ive been in England for 21 years (nearly), and David, I am so tired of hearing VITT-uh-min when the rules of English pronunciation would prescribe VAI-tuh-min, as God intended. Why do you silly sods pronounce corollary co-RAWL-uh-ry rather than CORE-uh-lai-ry? The former sounds like some sort of machine tool. And proper names? There are families in which the first name Featherstonehaugh can often be followed by the family name Featherstonehaugh. Why in the name of all thats holy is that combination pronounced FREE-ston-hew FAN-shaw? Just because its a first name you pronounce most of the letters, while dropping most of them in the last name? Pick one pronunciation and stick to it, will you? And names of towns and cities? Why is Worcester pronounced WUH-ster while Cirencester is pronounced SIGH-ren-sess-ter? And you numpties have the GALL to make fun of Americans who when asking the way to Leicester (LESS-ter) Square to see a movie pronounce it LIE-ches-ter and tell them that they should see a film FILL-um instead. So go on. Keep your stupid pronunciations. I could care less.
