Festus Iyayi, a renowned writer respected for his radical and sometimes tough stance on social and political issues died in the morning hours of Tuesday, November 12, 2013 in an auto crash involving some ASUU activists on their way to the Unions national congress in Kano. The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) has described the news of the death of Iyayi as a rude shock. According to the Executive Director of ANEEJ, Rev David Ugolor, “the death of Prof Iyayi is another sad news that reflect the urgent need for Nigerian to take active steps to end the culture of impunity in Nigeria” According to Ugolor, “Our leaders must be held accountable for the colossal loss. The death of Prof Iyayi marks a negative legacy for President Jonathan regime. All those who makes it impossible for the likes of Prof Iyayi to enjoy the fruit of their labours will one day pay the price, if not now, certainly in the future” The professor died on a failed portion of a Nigerian highway around Lokoja in Kogi state. Iyayi was born in 1947, in Ugbegun, Ishan, Edo State. In 1968, he left the shores of Nigeria to pursue his higher education, obtaining a M.Sc in Industrial Economics from the Kiev Institute of Economics, in the former U.S.S.R., and then his PhD from the University of Bradford, England. In 1980, he went back to Benin and became a lecturer in the Department of Business Administration at the University of Benin. A well known author, with four books to his credit (Violence, The Contract, Heroes, and Awaiting Court Martial); Dr. Iyayi won the Commonwealth Prize for Literature for his book Heroes in 1988. He was the President of ASUU from 1986, but in 1988 the union was briefly banned and Iyayai was detained. The death of Prof Iyayi, a man of such impeccable charisma is a big lost to the educational system of Nigeria and Nigerians at large given his pedigree, Ugolor concluded
