Davite wins 2013 Mt. Gorilla Rally National rally champion Giancarlo Davite won his second Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally title with a comfortable 24.34 seconds lead over close foe and compatriot Elefter Mitraros, with Uganda’s Christakis Fitidis completing the podium 26.29 seconds late yesterday at PSF grounds. The national champion, navigated by Sylvia Vindevogel in their Subaru Impreza N10 ‘Umuleti’, clocked three hours, two minutes and seven seconds to emerge victorious in the three day event that started with a Super Special Sprint in Gahanga on Friday. Mitraros who won last year’s edition finished second after clocking three hours, twenty six minutes and forty one seconds while Fitidis settled for third spot after clocking 03.28.36 in a total eleven competitive sections which covered 280.80km of which 335.70 were of road sections. With the victory, Davite who also won the 2009 Mt. Gorilla Rally, bounced back into the quest for the elusive African Rally Championship title. He is in third with 58 points and he wil hope that Jassy Singh of Zambia and Jas Mangat of Uganda fail to finish the Madagascar rally due in October. Mangat who was hoping to win the title in Rwanda bowed out of the race prematurely as he crushed on the CS11 end in Kajevuba. Jas Mangat’s lone Africa title challenger with a realistic chance Jassy Singh was fourth overall and scored crucial 18 Africa championship points that have kept his title hopes alive going in the Madagascar race next month. On the ARC standings, Mangat remains on top with 83 points, 12 points ahead of Singh and 25 points better than Davite. Ugandan pair of Patrick Kiwewe and Ismail Otega and Rwandan quartet of Claude Kwizera, Janvier Mutuga, Claude Gakwaya and Seif Muselemu all fell out on Sunday. Final classification 1.
