Dawn Loughborough We have known for over a decade that the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) can cause and spread polio thru fecal transmission. In the U.S., in 2000, the National Vaccine Program changed its policy to use the Injected Polio Virus (IPV) after children and caregivers changing their diapers had contracted polio. Really OPV was the only way polio was spreading any more. The better management of polio is thru hygiene and peace - most outbreaks of Polio have been following wars when sewage infrastructure is gone and diseases spread and rise. So I ask, why does anyone use OPV? And why in developing nations worst of all? I am most saddened by the Bollywood strategies used to promote this. Now 50,000 babies in India are paralyzed. This is an atrocity that did not have to be...what is it they say?... A preventable disease...if only they had used IPV!!!!! (And IPV has problems too...save for another post...)
