Day 03 Star Trek the Next Generation Space - The final - TopicsExpress

Day 03 Star Trek the Next Generation Space - The final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: To explore new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilization, to boldly go where no one has gone before. These are the opening lines of Star Trek as said by Captain Jean Luc Picard, the best Star Trek captain in any iteration of the series (arguably, but not really). This show is one of the greats and paved the way for many, many successful Science Fiction series that followed. While it is true that The Original Series (the one with Capt. Kirk) laid a lot of the groundwork, they did not have the budget or, quite frankly, the talent to portray Science Fiction on television as respectable. In my opinion, before TNG, all the Sci-fi television available came across as cheesy B movie-type shows that played to a very niche audience. They all had crappy acting, crappy sets, crappy effects, crappy music… You know, the kind of stuff that is fun to make fun of – see Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Star Trek TNG changed all of that. They very clearly had a bigger budget and wanted things to seem more real and less cheesy, so a lot of effort was put into that. There are a couple of not-so-great episodes, especially in the first season. Pretty much any episode where Troy is the main character is almost guaranteed to be a stinker. Other than that, the series holds up really well and I even got to see a couple digitally remastered episodes in theatres last year. I’ve never been to a convention, but would consider myself a fan. I DID go to the Star Trek Experience when I was in Las Vegas. It was cool, but slightly disappointing. If you like the current landscape of Sci-Fi shows and have not seen one of the great predecessors that made it possible, give it a try. My favorite character is Data. He is an advanced android who wishes to be more human. If you are a Star Trek virgin and want to check it out, I recommend the episode The Quality of Life (Season 6, Episode 9). There are so many good episodes to choose from, but this one is one of my favorites. Where to watch: Star Trek TNG can currently be seen on Netflix and Hulu Plus.
