Day 11 and disaster finally struck. I guess it had to happen at some point, but on a day when I’m feeling like I’ve gone ten rounds with David Haye and lost – heavily - let’s just say my mood has not been improved. The day started off fine. The weather was its usual wet and windy self, we wouldn’t have it any other way now, and the ride quite easy if you consider a 1,000 foot climb easy, but we’re old pros now. Or should that be we’re feeling like old pros now? By the time we’d reached the top the wind was howling and it was chucking it down. Anyway, after a couple of hours my gears started playing up. We thought we’d fixed the problem, but soon after, they jammed again. 19 miles from the end they jammed big time and I had to join Carolyn in the van for the rest of the ride. I’m gutted, absolutely gutted. This was a big tester for me, a challenge I’d set myself, and to have come so far and maybe not get to finish, to think it’s my bike that’s let me down and not my fitness, or health for that matter, is devastating. We’re going to find a bike shop tomorrow, first thing hopefully, and see if we can get the problem fixed. If not, I’m not sure what I’m going to do. The rest of the team are being as supportive as ever and I’m sure (hoping at least) the problem can be fixed. But the way I’m feeling at the moment – argh!
