Day 13: Being a nurse is one of the most inspiring experiences of my life. But its also one of the most heartbreakingly difficult things Ive ever done. Ive grown more in the last year, both personally and professionally, than I have in the past four years combined. This post is specifically for my patients, even though I know they will never read this. Its all the unspoken things I could never say directly, but I hope they feel it through my interactions with them: Working with people surviving and fighting cancer is one of the greatest blessings Ive ever been given. Through you, I am in awe of the resiliency of the human spirit. Your capacity for endurance is indescribably inspiring, and it gives me strength in my every day life. Your example constantly reminds me to breathe a little deeper, hug my kids a little tighter, and let go of the things I cant control. Because of you, I show more love and truly invest in the relationships that mean the most to me. My life is rich and meaningful because you have taught me to focus on the important things and not sweat the small stuff. Thank you for being the best teachers I could ever ask for, and for so generously offering lessons in wisdom and true compassion. I hope you know when I look at you I see a whole person and not just a diagnosis on paper. I see more than the physical pain. I see the emotional weight you are carrying. And while I am here to take care of the technical things, I am also here if you ever just want to sit and cry through it. Its okay, because I will probably cry too. I also hope you know you are more than this disease. While the battle is raging for you now, no matter the outcome you will win the war because your life has impacted so many. You are loved and cherished, and I am honored to be entrusted with your safekeeping. Please know that I see your face and I will remember your name. I promise you are not forgotten, in life or in death. It is in your memory that I take the time to truly live and soak it all in. Know that we fight for you, pray for you, cry for you, and love you. Thank you over and over again for reminding me what life is really all about. I am beyond blessed to be an oncology nurse. Its my calling, one that comes with many tears, but one that I wouldnt trade for the world. ❤️
