Day #177 – Peer support versus professional support Peer - TopicsExpress

Day #177 – Peer support versus professional support Peer support refers to support provided by people who are of equal standing with you, ones that have experienced a similar loss but do not have formal training in grief care. The support provided by peers is based on knowledge experienced from a loss and ways they have overcome the challenges by living with the loss on a daily basis. Professional grief support is support received by people who have been trained in the field of grief. They have knowledge of the phases of grief, expected behaviors and ideas to help you with forward momentum working through grief. What they don’t have is personal experience of what you are truly experiencing. For you, finding someone you can relate to, someone who understands and someone who you can ask honest questions is most important. Whether it is in the form of a peer or professional, you have to find the connection. What works best is a combination of both peer and professional support as it provides different perspectives -- yet it will be helpful during your journey.
