Day 2 Devotion: Read Matthew 6:16-18. Did you know that the Bible talks about fasting more than baptism? Fasting is a spiritual discipline that is often times forgotten. However, when practiced properly, fasting becomes a tremendous blessing and benefit. Fasting does not twist God’s arm to work how you want Him to. Rather, fasting is the practice of denying oneself for the sake of the Lord. It is a declaration of submission to his authority in your life and it communicates that you need Him more than anything else. Fasting establishes and enhances your dependence upon God. Take a moment to prayerfully consider committing to some type of fast this week. Unfortunately, many “religious” people would try to use fasting as a prideful display of their spirituality. The Lord is not interested in this type of hubris. Rather, God is pleased by a humble and content heart. Our reward is gaining His pleasure and blessing. Memorize Psalm 51:15-17.
