Day 2. My word of the day is pantomime. All the actors were present, all performed their lines, from time to time the audience joined in. In truth the chamber is where performances take place. The serious work is done far away from the pulpit of democracy. Today in the chamber the the Italian PM Matteo Renzi gave a spirited performance - his country has just taken on the Council Presidency. His country has been through much, so his comments had a certain poignancy. Unlike the debate that followed. And what did I do today? Well I secured my committee places: ENVI, ITRE, PECH. I will also be the British delegation spokesman on fisheries. A challenging portfolio. Coincidentally (or not) the day was spent in dialogue with a series of energy and fisheries interests.
