Day 6 of Fondest Moments: The Hospice of St Francis isnt just about our beds, but the care we provide in the community & in our outpatient Spring Centre for people like 41-year-old Matt Marshall. I realise now I had no idea what hospices do, says Matt, who was diagnosed with advanced cancer of the oesophagus last year. They’re about support, help, caring and sharing and the Hospice has been the support structure that’s helped me through the most difficult time of my life. Throughout my chemotherapy and since major surgery, I’ve attended the Hospice’s Spring Centre regularly for support, acupuncture and physio. At the same time, Liz, my community nurse, has phoned and visited regularly, helping to manage my symptoms, control my pain and give advice and psychological support. I live alone and Liz has been the family I don’t have on the doorstep. What a wonderful testimony from an amazing man, who even organised a friendly cricket match to raise funds for us. This is our way of saying thank you Matt as we send you our fondest thoughts this Christmas time. .
