Day 7 in Colorado: (Another late one) Kaleb woke up in such great spirits, smiling and saying he felt really good. He was excited about having some coffee with me...(When he was very little, we used to have coffee every morning outside in our backyard - these were some of the sweetest times in my memory, and we both love to relive those days.) At breakfast, he took a few bites of scrambled eggs and ate a bowl of pineapples and grapes, AND he drank two cups of Apple juice. He was elated. By the time his coffee cooled off, he was full lol. Then came his first wean of the day.... He was super congested and got choked a lot and then his anxiety became overwhelming. He went 53 minutes out of the scheduled hour. His blood pressure dropped too low to get up, and he was dizzy and nauseous. He cried several times from exhaustion and frustration and became extremely weak and just wasnt able to progress to any of his scheduled therapies. His heart rate dropped to the 40s and so he had to have some additional tests and had to be be placed on a heart monitor. He skipped lunch and slept for a good while. However, (yes - there is a happy however), he started feeling better and better as the evening came on. He ate good and he drank a Dr. Pepper! He doesnt even drink sodas lol. He wanted a root beer - which he finally got - and as it went down, he rolled his eyes! I asked if it was all he expected, and he said Yes, and so much more! Then he said, Movie? And so our evening went - pausing and playing and rewinding through breathing treatments and timed turns to avoid bed sores and suctioning and meds...but we were together and my heart was full. He was calm and happy and weaned for an hour around 10:00 p.m. We got through a crazy day fighting tears and nerves, and at the end of it we were stronger for it. Greater is He who is within me, than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4
