Day 798. Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE GEORGE FORTH 30987. Born in Caistor, Lincolnshire in April 1888 George was one of six children to William and Emma Forth of 10 Bridge Street, Brigg. A Grocer by trade he was living at East Gate House in Snaith when war broke out. Enlisting in Goole on 15th November 1915 he was originally a member of the 4th (Reserve) Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment and then the 8th. Shipping to France in July 1916, George fought on the Somme before being hospitalised with myalgia, first at 11th Casualty Clearing Station and subsequently in Manchester over the Winter of 1916-17. He returned to the trenches in the Spring and was eventually transferred to the 11th Battalion who were dug in to trenches at Vimy Ridge on 10th July 1917. He was fatally wounded five days later and died on 16th July. George is buried at Bois-Carre British Cemetery; he was 29 years old.
