Day 936. Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE CHARLES EDWARD BONTOFT - TopicsExpress

Day 936. Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE CHARLES EDWARD BONTOFT MANN 30353. Born in April 1899 in Barnsley, Charles was the only child of Arthur and Alice Mann of 10 Wesley Street, Otley. He enlisted in Louth and was sent to the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, to what was left of what had once been, in September 1914, the proud and patriotic 2nd Hull Pals. His military records are missing, no doubt destroyed like so many others during The Blitz when the building storing them was bombed and those that werent lost to the fires were damaged by water from the hoses. They may be lost but Im willing to bet, given his youth, that Charles was among the input of new soldiers fresh from training who were rushed into the line to make up numbers and who only arrived with the battalion on 2nd April 1918. If so, Charless war lasted ten days. He was killed in action on 12th April 1918 during the worst days of the German Spring Offensive and his body was never recovered; he was barely 19 years old and someones only son.
