Day 953. Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE JOSEPH DARLEY 41872. Born in 1900, Joseph was the son of Frederick and Mary Darley of 18 Cross Street South, Blackenhall, Wolverhampton. Enlisting in his hometown, he was sent to fill the decimated ranks of the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment arriving in Flanders on 31st March 1918 and joining the Pals on April 2nd. He lasted precisely ten days. Joseph Darley was killed in action on 12th April 1918 as the battalion moved up to meet the full force of the German Spring Offensive. Impossible to prove, but he may well have known PRIVATE BENJAMIN ALLEN MEES 41940 (Day 948), also from Wolverhampton and with a regimental number suggesting they enlisted very close together. Perhaps they were friends whod joined up the same day, perhaps not. Joseph is buried at Anzac Cemetery, Sailly-sur-la-Lys; he was 18 years old.
