The Opportunity The Dean will have a unique opportunity to lead a new College of Arts and Creative Enterprises (CACE) in the UAE’s dynamic cosmopolitan environment. Building on the foundation of a long-standing Department of Art and Design, the Dean will have an unparalleled opportunity to lead the development of a new type of college in the Middle East that will feature a full range of arts, design, and new media fields, within a comprehensive university. Founded in the Fall of 2012, the College offers programs in in Animation, Graphic Design, Interior Design and Visual Art. CACE also works closely with faculty in other university disciplines such as the majors in Emirati Studies, Multi-Media Design and the MA in Museum Studies. The CACE is the first of its kind in the U.A.E. and will be a leading contributor to ZU’s emergence as a great university in the emerging world cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The demand for creative specialists is growing exponentially in the U.A.E., and the creative enterprises play a major role in building and sustaining economically vibrant communities, creating jobs, generating public/private revenues, and improving the richness of life in the UAE society. CACE is positioned to become a nexus for international art and design in the Middle East. Abu Dhabi’s future as a cultural capital will rely on higher education’s capacity to service the needs of the city’s emerging creative industries, such as the world’s largest cultural project, the Saadiyat Island Cultural District. Zayed University also is on track to provide a high proportion of the Emirati graduates who will be needed in the Saadiyat museums, Dubai’s gallery districts, and other cultural initiatives, which will position Abu Dhabi and Dubai among those cities recognized worldwide for their cultural attractions. The Responsibilities • Develops a dynamic long-term strategy for the College that advances the University’s mission and goals. • Promotes the understanding of the College’s and the University’s mission and goals via its faculty, students, staff and curriculums. • Develops and sustains a curriculum aligned with NASAD standards and guidelines. • Develops and oversees the College’s budget. • Provides academic leadership to the College Faculty. • Engages in active, assertive faculty recruitment and retention. • Continuously works to improve the quality of instruction in the College. • Initiates and implements the College’s graduate programs. • Advances the College’s research agenda and activity. • Expands the College’s outreach and community engagement program. • Establishes and maintains close relationships with the UAE business community. • Prepares the College strategic plan and related budget proposals. • Collaborates with Student Affairs to sustain a positive learning environment and address issues of mutual concern such as academic integrity. • Assures a strong presence of the Dean and college leadership on both campuses. • Establishes academic alliances and partnerships with local schools, other institutions within the UAE, and leading international universities. • Leads the College’s participation in the University’s fund raising activity. The Requirements • A terminal degree in one of the arts fields from an accredited university; (e.g. MFA in studio arts or design, Ph.D. in Art History, Museum Studies, etc.). • Qualifications for appointment at the Associate or Full Professor rank in the college. • Five year’s experience in academic administration at the level of Department Chair or above. Preferably this experience will include experience as a Dean or Associate Dean of a College of Arts in a Western-type educational environment. • Demonstrated success as a teacher and artist/scholar with at least five year of successful full-time teaching in a recognized university or college. • Experience in a learning outcomes-based, assessment-rich, educational institution. • Evidence of leadership in the development of new programs that meet international standards and success in building teamwork and creating a shared vision. • Ability to work with faculty from diverse cultures and nationalities and across disciplinary lines. • Patience and tolerance for ambiguity and change and a high energy level. • International experience is preferred.
