Dear All I am delighted to release The KLF Concept Statement finalised by the core group: Thinkers, writers, poets and artists are amongst the most dominant constituents of a cultural society. They can deeply influence the members of the society, in particular the young minds. They play a key role in setting the cultural agenda of a society through their work. In the times of transition such as that our country is currently passing through, they have a far greater role to play. Kumaon Literary Festival has been founded with the objective of bringing together creative minds from around the country to offer an in-depth and meaningful debate and discussion on issues that confront the world of Indian literature and our cultural life as a nation. Conceptualised as the first annual “destination festival of its kind in the country, KLF will be built around an unconventional architecture. While offering an inclusive platform for all stakeholders to facilitate a profound, in-depth, free and frank dialogue and debate on issues that confront the world of Indian literature, KLF will serve as an independent and credible thought-leader that earns the respect of the literary community and to which the literary community defers to, for guidance. One of the key goals of the KLF is to provide a capable stage to the young and aspiring writers to voice their opinion; seek guidance, select mentors and interface meaningfully with experienced writers. Conferences and workshops to be organized by KLF will offer fair and equitable representation and opportunities to the wider sections of the literary spectrum, from the young to the experienced writers, the aspiring to the established, mainstream languages to those that are facing extinction, from one end of the country to the other, popular genre to less visible. KLF will strive to identify, promote and reward new talent; anchor the writers and poets from Kumaon region; engage with book lovers and book reading forums and other enthusiasts across the country; and offer a creative forum for networking. The festival will be curated in partnership with local community, and around partnerships and collaborations with the global and national bodies, forums and entities with common goals and objectives. KLF Architecture KLF Roundtable The KLF roundtable, a closed-door flagship event of the festival, will be held on the first two days of the five-day long festival. Comprising of a diverse group of thinkers and writers (maximum of 30), the roundtable will serve as an informed and independent voice that sets the agenda and debate in the world of literature, influences policies and practices around literature, and contributes towards the well being of society. The roundtable will be in the nature of a think tank that will discuss key literary and scholarly texts in order to generate new ideas and approaches to the study of literature and folklore. Credibility will be a key attribute of the roundtable. The deliberations of the Roundtable will be published. Attendance of the roundtable shall be by-invitation-only. An eminent person will chair the roundtable each year. The Festival Following the KLF Roundtable, a three-day festival will be held to appreciate and promote the art of story-telling, great works of literature, journalistic writing, poetry, non-fiction and copy writing through a number of events. The participants of the festival (a maximum of 30, in addition to the 30 participants of the roundtable) will represent both, the mainstream and the lesser-known languages. Participants from diverse spaces come together as co-creators rather than passive spectators. KLF will explore innovative ideas and discover new talent. The final day of the festival will center on the Himalayan region, with participation of children from local schools, interaction with local storytellers, artists and community. An eminent writer will chair the KLF each year. Social events The festival will also hold a vibrant fringe programme with story telling and performances by artists from Kumaon and other hill regions, walks in the woods, picnic lunches, interaction with local community and much more.
