Dear All, There have been a number of incidents including attempted/actual car jackings and robberies recently on the CBD side of Port Moresby and in particular the areas of Airvos Avenue, Daugo drive, McKenzie Street, Chester Street, Ogoa Street and also Lawes Road. Last night the 19th of March, 2014 at approximately 9.15pm a gentleman and his wife had drove down Lawes road (towards Post Courier) and turned right onto Champion parade. On reaching a point opposite Goodman Fielder (opposite the redevelopment of Sir Hubert Murray Stadium), a rascal taking advantage of the darkness of the stadium side of the road walked out onto the road armed with a factory made handgun. The driver on realizing that he was to be held up accelerated and drove towards the rascal who then fired his gun directly at the windscreen striking it at the top of the screen. At the same time a group of rascals at the side of the road then threw multiple pieces of rock at the side of the car in an attempt to smash the windows. Fortunately the security film on the windows prevented any penetration. I would like to reiterate earlier warnings travel of a night time along Champion parade and Lawes road and the risk of becoming the subject of a car- jacking. If you must travel at night please do so in convoy. A lone vehicle will always present an appealing target to a would be armed robber. In another incident today at 10.30am a gentleman travelling along the Morea Tobo road was by necessity travelling slowly due to the road works being carried out; on reaching a point opposite the 6 mile market a rascal armed with a home- made pistol rushed onto the road and attempted to car jack him. The driver then attempted to run over the rascal who then fled. Avoid travel in locations where your options for evasive action are limited, especially along roads where there is roadwork or some other feature which requires you to travel slowly. Just a timely reminder for everyone to pay particular attention to your personal security. The vast majority of crimes are opportunistic, therefore by adhering to the security advice, processes and procedures that are in place you will significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of crime. Some of the generic personal security advice you can implement includes: • Be particularly aware of how much cash you carry whilst out shopping, try and use ATM cards instead of cash for larger shopping trips. • Be mindful of how you carry your handbags and/or wallets and don’t have them easily accessible to potential thieves. • When attending supermarkets and shopping centres try and park close to the entrance, this reduces the amount of time walking to and from your vehicle and the security guards generally have a greater presence close by. • Walk with purpose and maintain a confident demeanour whilst walking to and from your car. Looking unsure and apprehensive can increase the likelihood of you becoming a potential victim. • Only use ATMs inside secure locations such as hotels and clubs etc. Don’t use ATMs in open spaces such as supermarket car parks as you are an easy target. • If you do find yourself in a situation where an armed offender is demanding money give them what they want so they depart quickly. Attempting to fight off the offender when you are not under direct physical attack will only lead to you being physically harmed. • Don’t leave bags etc visible in your car whilst parked outside as this could give the perception something of value is in them and offenders may attempt to break into your vehicle. • If you do go walking, running or cycling, do so in groups. • Always ensure your mobile phone is fully charged and has sufficient credits to make calls in the event of an emergency.
