Dear Allen West, et al Term Limits seem like a great idea, right up until you really examine what it is youre talking about. Sure, when the guys a dud - limiting him out of office is swell! But what about a guy thats great? (It doesnt matter that I cant name any right this minute... oh, wait: Louie Gohmerts pretty good; so is Tom McClintock) Anyway; the point is, term limits come at a price. A hidden one, in fact. You see, what term limits really do is EMPOWER the Administrative State --- you know, all those nameless, faceless, totally unaccountable bureaucrats that really run the onerous machine of Government. The Administrators; the Regulators; the Directors ... They are the ones who have been there forever and know where all the bodies are buried. And the pencils. We now know a few of their names: Lois Lerner, Jeff Neely, Shirley Sherrod, Steven Miller - but only because their actions were SO egregious - SO outlandish - that after decades on the job, their administrative mask of anonymity was torn away... if only temporarily. But the truth is, there are THOUSANDS of Lois Lerners-es in Government. And between the protection of unions and the astronomical density of the bureaucratic machine in Washington DC, we cannot afford to give them one more drop of power. Yet thats exactly what Term Limiting our elected officials will do. Is there a place for institutional expertise? Surely. But in the tradition of Checks-and-Balances, we must have equity - and today, we do not. Should some rules be changed in regard to how politicians do business? Probably so. Theres plenty of pretty hairy stuff in the halls of the White House, House, Senate (and Court - but thats another conversation). They represent a threat, but because of the election cycle, I believe that the bigger, growing threat comes from an expanding bureaucracy.
