Dear Charlotte Annie, thank you for inviting me to this list making. Its been strange watching the lists fly around, especially the men who are making lists without A SINGLE woman poet, I mean REALLY NOT EVEN ONE? HOW is that possible? Not even asking that question on the grounds of the obvious unconscious behavior behind the action of excluding women poets in 2014, Im literally asking HOW is it possible to not REALIZE HOW MANY AMAZING women are writing poetry!! When University of Arizonas Poetry Center asked me to compile a list of books when I was a visiting poet I published that list online only to receive a couple of emails from young dude poets (not even crabby OLDER male poets), poets much younger than me complaining about the gender of my list. To be honest it wasnt until they wrote that I realized that more than half the list was women, but I was just putting books on the list I LOVE. One email was more cordial than the other, making a joke of his writing me at all about it, but the other actually asked if I had something AGAINST male poets. What do you say? poetryshelves.blogspot I looked at the list with him and said, There are men there, huh, what is this about? C’MON! He stopped writing to me about it BUT he had taken several of my workshops, meaning you would think... WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE LIST is the number of books about trees. Or trees in the titles. I LOVE trees. And LOVE poems about trees. Lets write some TREE poems one day Charlotte? Maybe in October when I visit your lovely city again? But you have asked me to compile a list of 13 books important to me where only 2 are men. No a problem.
