Dear Facebook Friends and Family: Over the past two months, I have received thousands of emails, texts, private messages, and singing telegrams expressing genuine concern about the health of my mangled left thumb. Not since Baby Jessica fell down a well has a tiny mound of pink flesh so galvanized the American people. Thank you! Your outpouring of compassion both humbles and touches me – but not in an icky, below-the-swimsuit-area kind of way. As a small token of my gratitude, I share with you this photo of my thumb on the road to recovery, taken today, shortly after I pried off the blackish-purple old nail with a pair of flat-head tweezers. Sure, my thumb resembles the penis of a 96-year-old man, but, considering what it looked like three or four weeks ago, theres no denying: Things are looking up!
