Dear Friend of the Diversity Project - We are starting a new year of activity, with an action-packed MLK weekend, January 16th -19th. In addition to the Friday night presentation by long-time advocate for equality Kathleen Saadat described below, there will also be a presentation at Clatsop Community College at noon on Friday, Jan. 16th. The public is welcome to attend this, too. And then that evening - The Lower Columbia Diversity Project invites the public to “Don’t Let Go! – Keeping the Dream Alive” – with Kathleen Saadat. Friday, January 16th, 2015, 7 – 9 pm, in the Judge Guy Boyington Building, 857 Commercial Street, Astoria, OR. The presentation is free, and everyone is welcome to attend. Born in St. Louis, MO, and raised in a family committed to justice and education, Kathleen Saadat graduated from high school in Chicago in 1957 and from Reed College in Portland, Oregon in 1974, earning a BA in Psychology. Ms. Saadat retired from the position of Manager of Diversity and Affirmative Action for the City of Portland at the end of 2012. She has continued to work as a private consultant and trainer in the areas of human diversity, organizational development and as a motivational speaker. Ms. Saadat has received lifetime achievement awards from Portland PFLAG Black Chapter and Portland’s Equity Foundation; a Civil Liberties Award from the Oregon chapter of the ACLU; and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Arts Foundation in recognition of her contributions to the efforts to Keep Living the Dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She is concerned with social and economic justice, what happens to our children and with the issue of peace. This presentation is made possible in part by a grant from the McKenzie River Gathering Foundation. Then on Monday, January 19th, the Lower Columbia Diversity Project invites the public to join in honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. On Monday, January 19th, 2015, a candlelight walk through downtown Astoria will start at the corner of 12th and Commercial at 5:30 pm. Following the walk, everyone is invited to Peace Lutheran’s Fellowship Hall for a free soup dinner and a short program. So - Friday, Jan. 16th - noon to 1 pm, Clatsop Community College, Columbia Hall, Room 219 Friday, Jan. 16th - 7 - 9 pm, Boyington Building, 857 Commercial Street Monday, Jan. 19th - 5:30 pm, Candlelight Walk honoring the dream of Martin Luther King, Jr. - 12th and Commercial, Astoria OR.
