Dear Friends, I am writing concerning a recent a letter from the religious sisters of Adores of the Cross from Dalat-Vietnam who now reside in the Ascension parish in Portland, Oregon. With the recent declaration of bankruptcy by the Archdiocese and some financial difficulties from Ascension parish, it was suggested that the property which the sisters live should be placed for sale. They were shocked by this news and did not know what to do next. Thanks to God’s providence, the sisters got help and intervention from the chancellor, Episcopal vicar for religious sisters. It was suggested that the parish would negotiate the sale of their community at the price of $800, 000.00, 1/3 of market price, with the stipulation that they need to put down a sizable amount in cash, and then pay the rest in mortgage. As simple and poor sisters, they only know how to teach catechism/language and do some pastoral services, and have no skills in doing fund raising. With advice from financial counselors, each sister was asked to appeal for funds through their families. My blood sister, Sr. Mary Kim Chi Bui is a member of this order and very dear to my heart.
