Dear Friends – For many individuals, High Holy Day experiences - TopicsExpress

Dear Friends – For many individuals, High Holy Day experiences are a blend of memories. Some of these memories are created at home with family and friends. We eat apples and honey to begin a sweet new year and often celebrate with the same people, watching our families evolve over time. From one year to the next, the ritualization of family experiences helps us structure time and enables us to forge sacred relationships with each other. Much of the same kinds of “memory making” takes place in the context of the Holy Day worship experiences we share as well. The shofar blown on Rosh HaShanah. We fast on Yom Kippur. Our services are reflective, and the sermons are (hopefully) inspiring. Of all the “memory making” elements, however, few aspects of the Holy Day worship experience have more emotive potential than the music that is used. Consider the power and awe generated by hearing Kol Nidre or Avinu Malkenu. These musical pieces help us transcend time and space, connecting us with generations from the past and Jews around the world. The power and beauty of Holy Day music will be the subject of this year’s Holy Day Workshop. Join us for an evening of spiritual as we take a journey through the musical aspects of the High Holy Day liturgy. This course is being taught by Cantor Aaron Kaplan and is designed to help deepen your understanding of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Cantor Kaplan’s vast knowledge of Jewish music and his love for Classical Reform Judaism will be the backdrop for an evening designed to add meaning to the many services we will be sharing during this penitential season. The Holy Day Workshop will take place next Wednesday night, August 28 from 7:00 – 8:30. All are invited for an evening that will leave you well prepared for the Days of Awe. L’Shalom – Steve
