Dear Goo...hope youre feeling much better! Were trying to help out this sweet little FIV+ guy in Hong Kong and wondered if you wouldnt mind sharing his story for us? Thank you! xxx With complete faith in the power of social media and networking and hope in the belief that the world is still full of good, kind people, I’m sharing Brando’s story – all the way from Hong Kong! We are a small group of girls (four!) doing our best to help our local street cats and dogs by doing TNR and rescue and rehoming wherever possible. We don’t receive any financial assistance other than the odd donation from a few wonderful local residents. Some days, the task/s ahead seem overwhelming. Brando was one of our TNRs – a beautiful, young, sleek, black male, who was neutered and released back in February 2014. With reasons to innumerable to list, colony care and animal welfare in Hong Kong is vastly different to other parts of the world. Things are just done differently here and as an “outsider”, no matter how much it frustrates and confounds us, sometimes we have no choice but to accept that some things are as they are. Fast-forward to October 2014 and I spied a black cat hiding in a rockery with a terrible facial wound. I was horrified, and immediately set about trying to trap the injured kitty. The process would take five long, painstaking weeks! Finally, success; we had our Brando. He was a terrible mess, though bless him, as calm as calm could be. I think he knew we wanted to help. A visit to one of our wonderful vets, some blood tests, a biopsy and cleaning and stitching…and some bad news. Brando tested FIV+ We decided to continue with his treatment as he was in otherwise good health and although he had come in off the streets, his initial demeanor suggested there was a slight chance he may with time, be suitable for adoption to the right person. As his wound improves (about 75% healed) we are desperate for someone in Hong Kong who might consider giving this handsome man a chance at a life off the streets. He is by no means a lap cat and he will, in all honesty, probably be one of those invisible kitties who come for food and have minimal interaction. None of our group are in a position to offer this kind of set-up…Hong Kong is a unique place in terms of housing and population (extremely transient for most expats like ourselves…) If everyone could just share Brando’s story, I am hopeful that someone local may follow one of your wonderful pages and offer to help. The alternative for him is not a positive one and for us, that just isn’t an option. Thank you for caring and sharing!
