Dear Karma Family: I also stopped by the local branch office of the Armed Services and spoke with them about how we can lift a soldiers spirits this Christmas. I spoke with an officer and he told us about the time in Afghanistan where he was stationed and he received a Christmas package from a gentleman and his family. The way he spoke about the card and the letter thanking him for his service. The gentleman included a photo of his family. To this solider that is what he remembered more than what was in the package. I wont lie I am crying now because of his story and it has touched me to my core. He said that even though they know they have supporters here it doesnt always feel that way while you are stuck so far away from friends and families and especially at Christmas. So I asked him for suggestions on what made their day just a little bit better when they get packages. He said crosswords and puzzle books, magazines like popular mechanics, fitness magazines, books, dvds, and CANDY....not chocolate, Skittles or tootsie rolls LOL but the favorite candies are Twizzlers, Gummy Bears, candy corn, jolly ranchers and gum. He said that things that are often sent that really arent necessary is hygiene, wipes, tooth brushes and things like that. They now have ways of buying these things so they are not really needed. I think the most important thing we need to send is again cards, thank you letters, and even handmade items. He suggested when Halloween is over (the stores mark everything down and the kids forget everything but the chocolate) we could send just a big box of these things in little Ziploc baggies for them to hand out to several soldiers. This is a project that will be so cheap and easy to do however we have to move faster on this one because it will take about 3 weeks for the packages get there and that will be the most expensive part. If this is a project you and your family are interested in please let me know. Oh and the Kool-Aid sticks for water, hot cocoa WITH the little marshmallows, apple cider these simple things can make the world just a little bit better for a soldier who is FIGHTING and PROTECTING our families.
