Dear Marsha, Thank you for contacting me about the Farm Bill - TopicsExpress

Dear Marsha, Thank you for contacting me about the Farm Bill amendment to exclude hemp from the definition of marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act. I appreciate your perspective on this issue. As a third-generation farmer, my priority is to make sure the Farm Bill works for family farmers and ranchers in Montana. However, during the debate on the bill, the Senate was not able to reach an agreement to vote on this amendment. Montana farmers know what is best for their farms and livelihoods. In 2001, when I was a State Senator, the Montana Legislature approved a bill to recognize industrial hemp as an agricultural crop. This legislation also established a licensing procedure that allows local farmers to grow hemp commercially. I have always trusted the judgment of the people of Montana and feel that the larger issues surrounding the uses and definition of hemp is best addressed at the state level. Please do not hesitate to contact me again if I can be of further assistance. Sincerely, Jon Tester United States Senator
