Dear Mr BS Aquino.. i guess its time... adieu... The Ateneo Law Student Council has denounced President Benigno Aquino IIIs criticism of the Supreme Court over the high courts decision to declare portions of the controversial Disbursement Acceleration Program as unconstitutional. In light of this decision, the public witnessed how no less than the President himself… criticized not only the decision but the Supreme Court itself and valiantly defended DAP… Worse are the hints of threats posed against the justices and the Court itself, the student body said in a statement posted on its Facebook page over the weekend. The ALSC said the Supreme Courts ruling on DAP means that the high tribunal was exercising its mandate to interpret the laws of the land, and that Aquinos action at the least, blatantly disrespects the fundamental principle of co-equality between and among the three great branches. It can be remembered that this administration takes pride in taking the country towards its corruption-free tuwid na daan (right path) but it bears stressing that one can never be matuwid (right) if the mechanisms one uses violate the highest law of the land, the statement read. The Ateneo Law Student Council is one with the Filipino people in the call to uphold the Rule of Law and defend the integrity of the Judiciary. After all, ours is a Rule of Law and never a Rule of Men, the statement added. During a televised speech last week, Aquino assailed the high tribunal over its decision to declare parts of the administrations DAP as unconstitutional. At the same time, he said the Executive Department will appeal the high courts ruling even if the vote has been unanimous. Mahirap pong maintindihan ang desisyon ninyo, Aquino said. The Supreme Court, meanwhile, has chosen to hold its peace as regards the Presidents pronouncements. But last Monday, workers in the judiciary, particularly from the Supreme court and the Sandiganbayan, wore red and black as a sign of protest against the President. Early this month, the Supreme Court voted 13-0 in declaring some parts of DAP as unconstitutional. In particular, the high court struck down the cross-border transfer of savings of the Executive Department under National Budget Circular No.541, or DAP. Other law student councils are expected to come out with their respective stand on the issue surrounding DAP. The University of the Philippines College of Law Student Government is currently preparing a statement regarding the issue of DAP, Bam Santos, president of the student body, told GMA News Online on Tuesday. Two impeachment complaints against the President have been lodged at the House of Representatives . The complaints cited culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust as the grounds for impeachment over the issue of DAP, the first one by the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan and the second one, by youth groups led by Youth Act Now. — RSJ/KBK, GMA News Tags: Bantay Kaban gmanetwork/news/story/371405/news/nation/ateneo-law-student-council-pnoy-disrespected-the-supreme-court https://facebook/ateneolawSC/photos/a.181855535200157.64227.174025889316455/771301262922245/?type=1&relevant_count=1
