Dear Shelly, By now, you have likely seen images or heard of the terrible destruction caused by super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), which struck the Philippines on Friday, November 8. It was one of the strongest storms in recorded history and has affected millions. Needless to say, the storm has been particularly painful for us to witness us as nearly 2,000 Soroptimist members reside in the Philippines. While disasters create hardships for everyone, women and girls are especially vulnerable due to existing gender inequities as well as their role as caregivers. During and after a disaster, ensuring the physical safety of women and girls is particularly challenging. This is why we plan to call upon a number of international relief organizations to provide specific assistance to women and girls. But we need YOUR help to encourage their support.
