Dear Spurs Fan......... I had to get this off my chest tonight. This is getting comical. Listening to ppl speak who have no clue how the game of Basketball has evolved and how franchises are owned, managed and operated. By consensus, I think most ppl just follow the box scores and watch way too much Sports Center. Lol... (Hello, SC is a media outlet they have an agenda. (PROMOTE CONTROVERSY & SHAPE YOUR OPINION) Do people read anymore? or pay attention to the details? Lol.. ---------------------- So Im having this conversation with a gentleman tonight & this comes out. I SUPPORT TEXAS TEAMS. I told him The Sacramento Kings, once the Kansas City Kings now have relocated and I live in Texas, so does that mean I should be a Kings fan bc I grew up majority of my life in K.S.... Lol... (No) Still laughing. ---------------------- My point to him, well I support all teams in the NBA and I support the Heat bc I respect Pat Riley and I love many of the Heat players. I personally identify with many of them bc of the circumstances in which I was raises, growing up in a single parent home many years. Does that make me wrong? I expressed that I personally have a great deal of respect for Lebron, growing up without a father, I think hes done pretty well for himself. --------------------- Point 1. I pointed out that the Spurs have 10 players on their team who are all international players, not born in the United States. Its funny how we as Americans will support things that are convenient. Basketball is a global sport and while many of the franchises in the NBA are diverse having both foreign and American born players representative of franchises. Over 90% of the Spurs roster is comprised of players whose nationality is of non-U.S. decent. This does not make them wrong. This is how they chose to build their roster. Im fine with that, personally. I just find it funny how we as Americans can bash or own home grown players bc they have made choices (free agents) to not play for our favorite franchise, but yet be be supportive of players who dont represent our country in World Championship play or the Olympics (Tony Parker, Mano Genobli). Be real. You cant have it both ways! If your going to support your teams, you should also remember who it is that represents your country in the world championships and Olympic play. Oh, how we support things that are convenient. My opinion, root for your team, but respect all the players. Respect the game and the process. ---------- Point 2. While it is no secret that the Spurs have been successful internationally in their building and recruitment of its roster. My second point to this gentleman, there is more than one way to build a franchise. With Salary cap, luxury taxes, free agency and the fact that PLAYERS LEAVE COLLEGE AFTER 1 SEASON. Player movement is unavoidable and if your in a small market and you can attract free agents its better to win than to wallow in obscurity for years. Look at the 76ers, Bucks, Hawks, Pelicans, Magic, Pistons, Lakers, Knicks, Timberwolves & Raptors. When is the last time any of these franchises have made the playoffs consistently? Fans pay outrageous sums of money to attend these games and the teams are pretty much a wash year to year. These franchises would give anything to remain relevant. Some of these teams are small markets and some are large with big TV deals (Lakers & Com Cast Cable) & they are still irrelevant. Im not knocking any of these franchises. All I am saying is respect the process of building and winning there is more than one formula to success. Player movement is unavoidable. Barkley, Malone, Drexler, M.J. Wilkins, Sean Elliott, Robert Horry, Shaquille O neal. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Steve Nash, Chauncy Billups, Penny Hardaway, Tim Hardaway, Grant Hill, Tracy Mc Grady & Vince Carter, etc... have all moved and gone to different teams in their NBA careers. With exception of the core (Duncan, Parker & Genobli) the Spurs roster has had turn over too. Constantly! You can build around the core, but every team has player movement. Welcome to the NBA. This isnt the 80s its 2014. Find the future and let go of the past. LeBron & Bosh are no different than anyone else listed. They have every opportunity to move and create opportunity to win or capitalize on their ability. What does make them special, is that unlike most of the players above. They moved in their prime not at the end of their careers, which in my book makes them smart. Since when does being smart and capitalizing on your opportunities make you a villain? Since when is it wrong bc you choose to build your franchise with smart drafting, free agents and player development. Isnt that the name of the game? Manage your salary cap, develop players and win championships? Spurs Fan try asking any of those fans from those other franchises if they would take any level of stability any way they could get it after paying those high ticket prices and I dont think you will hear them complaining or thinking they are ELITE bc they have held on to 3 players of over a decade. I think they will take stability any way they could get it. You Spurs fans are spoiled and you all live in a bubble. Your bubble is about to go burst when those 3 retire. What will you do? You will be young, inexperienced in ever so competitive Western Conference and possibly a lottery team. The tread on their tires is worn out & they may have one more run in them after 2014. Its a young mans game. Look ahead, stop looking in the past, championships are won by what you do today and tomorrow. The glory years have passed.. Just saying... -------------- Go Heat.. newsweek/international-conspiracy-behind-success-san-antonio-spurs-253711
