Dear Student Colleagues: Are you considering directed research, a topic for a clinic project, in what directions your legal career might lead, want to broaden your awareness of important issues at the intersection of legal services and California’s kids, or want to meet professionals working in those areas? Here’s a great opportunity to learn more. The Children’s Advocacy Institute sponsors a quarterly Children’s Advocates Roundtable that brings together stakeholders in the legislative and legal communities to discuss issues central to children, with an emphasis on foster care, juvenile justice, and more. The next Roundtable will take place on July 10 in downtown Sacramento, from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. There will be presentations by Step Up Coalition, California Youth Connection, and the National Center for Youth Law about their work to improve resources for foster youth living with relatives, as wel as by Public Counsel regarding AB 388, its progress and implications. The Children’s Law Center will discuss efforts to reduce dependency attorney caseloads, and there will be other discussion of the state budget in these areas. Roundtable participants will have the opportunity to share and discuss their priority legislation, ask for support where needed, and discuss any issues or bills about which there are concerns. There is usually ample time for questions and open discussion. If you RSVP in advance, you’ll even get lunch, or you can also call in to the meeting. I’ll be there, and I encourage any you with an interest in these areas to attend. Hit me up if you have questions. To see more information and to RSVP, the link is below. I hope to see you there!
