Dear Students, Faculty and Staff, Please join me in congratulating Maureen Eckert, Associate Professor, from the Philosophy Department as the February recipient of CARES (Chancellors Award Recognizing Excellence in Service). Dr. Eckert was nominated by both a graduate and an undergraduate student from the College of Arts & Sciences. She was nominated not only for her work within the classroom, but also for her tireless efforts outside of the classroom to engage and empower her students. Per one nomination, I can see her zeal for her classroom topics every single time she presents. She truly loves what she teaches and does everything in her power to make sure that everyone in the class feels that excitement for the subject as well. She engages the students in lectures and discussions, and works tirelessly for students who have the potential to excel in the field of Philosophy. Her dedication to the Philosophy Association has given the students a phenomenal experience outside of the classroom. She coordinates guest speakers and conferences that have been a boon to our educational experience on this campus. Through her efforts and dedication to the Association, she has developed summer programs in philosophy for students. In addition, students seek Maureen out for assistance in other areas that are not necessarily related to Philosophy. She brings vegan stew when someone is not feeling well! It is stated that Maureen works to make sure her students are heard by the people who need to hear them. She empowers students to take matters into their own hands and not accept the status quo, whether it be a personal matter or a school-related matter. I know she actually cared about me as a person and as a student. That sort of relationship is truly beneficial on this campus, especially coming from a professor to a student. She has done tremendous things for the Philosophy Association, the Philosophy Department, her students and the University as a whole. I know I speak on behalf of the UMassD community by saying thank you to Dr. Maureen Eckert for making a difference and for demonstrating exemplary service to our students! I am so proud of Maureen and look forward to learning of the next CARES recipient. If you know someone deserving of this recognition, please let us know by completing a nomination form.
