Dear Students, I want to introduce myself to you as the new - TopicsExpress

Dear Students, I want to introduce myself to you as the new Dean of our Law School. It is a great honour for me to serve you in this role. My ambition is to continue to ensure we provide legal education of the highest international standards. I have been impressed by the commitment of staff to your education and also the enthusiasm of the student community to engage with legal issues both within and outside the curriculum. I saw this in the ADR mooting competition during my first week in office. I have met some of you in orientation week, but for students not in the first year I have not yet had the opportunity to talk with you. Therefore I am holding a forum on 15 October 2014 (Wednesday) 6 pm in School of Law Conference Room (P5401 5/F Academic Building 1) where I will introduce myself and my ideas for developing the School, but more importantly would like to hear students’ views on how we can enhance our School even more. My ambition is to make the School run as smoothly as possible. In any large organization occasionally things will go wrong and we will seek to redress issues and efficiently as possible. As lawyers you will understand that effective complaints handling is normally best handled informally at the level closest to the matter of concern. I am confident that we will be able to resolve most issues informally without needing to resort to formal processes. After all the staff are here to try to assist you to achieve your goals with the rules of the institution. Therefore do please raise your concerns with them informally and let us hear your ideas for improvement. We are our colleagues in our joint endeavour to study and develop the law. We are uniquely placed at the centre of the common law and dispute resolution world in Asia. We are well placed to produce some of the most attractive graduates, who can combine first class common law legal training with an understanding of Chinese legal culture and practice. I am dedicated to taking full advantage of this good fortune and look forwarding to working with the student community. I look forward to seeing many of you on 15 Oct 2014. Yours sincerely, Geraint Howells Dean School of Law
