Dear Supporters of the Italian Film Festival USA - TopicsExpress

Dear Supporters of the Italian Film Festival USA (IFF-USA), Italy is the country that has won the Oscar for best foreign language film more often than any other country in the world, 14 wins so far. Last year, the Italian La grande bellezza (The Great Beauty) won this prestigious prize. This year, Il capitale umano (The Human Capital) was selected to represent Italy in the race for the 2015 best foreign language film Oscar. Virzì’s film was chosen over Anime nere (Francesco Munzi) and Le meraviglie (Alice Rohrwacher). The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. Nine shortlisted contenders will be revealed a week before the announcement of the Oscar nominations. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will then announce the five official Oscar nominees in the Best Foreign Language Film category on Jan. 15, 2015. Il capitale umano, set in northern Italy, is a “social thriller” that tells the story of an accident from different overlapping perspectives. The film and its actors have already been awarded numerous International prizes, notably, the 2014 David di Donatello for Best Film and the 2014 Silver Ribbon Awards (Nastro D’argento) for Best Director. Last April, Il capitale umano was presented in the United States at the Tribeca Film Festival where Valeria Bruni Tedeschi won the Best Actress award.
